HEP@Home - A distributed computing system based on BOINC

Project SETI@HOME has proven to be one of the biggest successes of distributed computing during the last years. With a quite simple approach SETI manages to process large volumes of data using a vast amount of distributed computer power. To extend the generic usage of this kind of distributed computing tools, BOINC is being developed. In this paper we propose HEP@HOME, a BOINC version tailored to the specific requirements of the High Energy Physics (HEP) community. The HEP@HOME will be able to process large amounts of data using virtually unlimited computing power, as BOINC does, and it should be able to work according to HEP specifications. In HEP the amounts of data to be analyzed or reconstructed are of central importance. Therefore, one of the design principles of this tool is to avoid data transfer. This will allow scientists to run their analysis applications and taking advantage of a large number of CPUs. This tool also satisfies other important requirements in HEP, namely, security, fault-tolerance and monitoring.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Postscript figures, uses CHEP2004.cls, submitted to CHEP200

Leaving of the necessity of users of university libraries, currently working in more digital and available platforms each time in the Internet, free softwares has versions searching to answer adequately to these demands, being sold at a loss general costs of implantation of software. The present article aims at to carry through the comparative evaluation between two softwares free: the OpenBiblio and the Gnuteca, amongst other available ones in the Brazilian market of softwares for university libraries while complete systems of automation. A revision of national and international literature was made, having as methodology the important considered election of itens in this task. The choice of a software (either of “free code” or proprietor) that it works as automatized systems covering all its functions of university libraries, requires to consider aspects as so great of quantities, strategies of growth, human resources and financial e, over all, the demands of its users varying very of library for library. We point, for end, general aspects of the comparative evaluation between the OpenBiblio and the Gnuteca and of the evaluated criteria

Grid-Brick Event Processing Framework in GEPS

Experiments like ATLAS at LHC involve a scale of computing and data management that greatly exceeds the capability of existing systems, making it necessary to resort to Grid-based Parallel Event Processing Systems (GEPS). Traditional Grid systems concentrate the data in central data servers which have to be accessed by many nodes each time an analysis or processing job starts. These systems require very powerful central data servers and make little use of the distributed disk space that is available in commodity computers. The Grid-Brick system, which is described in this paper, follows a different approach. The data storage is split among all grid nodes having each one a piece of the whole information. Users submit queries and the system will distribute the tasks through all the nodes and retrieve the result, merging them together in the Job Submit Server. The main advantage of using this system is the huge scalability it provides, while its biggest disadvantage appears in the case of failure of one of the nodes. A workaround for this problem involves data replication or backup.Comment: 6 pages; document for CHEP'03 conferenc

BRAZILIAN NATIONAL COMMON CURRICULAR BASE AS AN ENUNCIATION: REINFORCING SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSES FOR THE EDUCATION FIELD?

ABSTRACTAfter a few decades in which both the curriculum theoretical discussion and the curriculum organization in Brazilian schools were predominantly characterized in the direction of diversity, differences and singularities, last and present year’s debate were marked by the resumption of a discussion on a common national basis. In this essay, we argue that the official documents of the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base are the result of perspectives that attribute the status of science to the field of education – and its association with reality and truth. The analysis undertaken was based on categories such as discourse and enunciation, prominent in the current international theories on curriculum.KEYWORDS: curriculum; educational policy; philosophy

    Get PDF

Identity, identification and differentiation in contemporary brazilian comedies

We explore how Deleuze’s notion of the ‘powers of the false’, from Cinema 2, enables a consideration of the ways in which national identity is negotiated in two popular Brazilian comedies of the 2000s, Se Eu Fosse Você/If I Were You (2006) and Se Eu Fosse Você 2/If I Were You 2 (2009). The films offer possibilities for various Brazilian audiences to reimagine national identities “against the grain” of a movement-image blockbuster with an apparently homogenising white, middle class, nuclear family-oriented, normative image of national identity.  Studying the aesthetics of these artistic productions, understanding their implications for people and for world representations as structured by the look and its narrative, we found contributions to cultural identities discussions on curriculum studies.

Oxygen consumption and substrate utilization during and after resistance exercises performed with different muscle mass

International Journal of Exercise Science 9(1): 77-88, 2016. This study investigated the energy expenditure (EE) and substrate utilization reflected by the respiratory-exchange ratio (RER) during and after resistance exercises performed with different muscle mass. Ten male volunteers (mean±SD; 26±4yr, 179±6cm, 77±8kg) performed multiple sets of the horizontal leg press (LP) and chest fly (CF) (5 sets of 10 repetitions with 15 repetition-maximum, 1-minute between-set intervals) in a counterbalanced design. Oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production were measured during 40 minutes of resting; resistance exercise protocols (sets and intervals); 90 minutes of post-exercise recovery. Total fat and carbohydrate oxidation rates were calculated according to the non-protein respiratory quotient. Both exercise conditions elicited net excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) of similar duration (approximately 40min). The EPOC magnitude at 40 minutes was greater after LP than after CF (7.36±1.10L vs. 4.73±0.99L; P\u3c0.001). The RER was higher in LP (1.30±0.04) than CF (1.16±0.05, P=0.0003) during exercise. During recovery the RER was similar in LP and CF (P\u3e0.05) and lower than pre-exercise (Pre-exercise=0.78±0.04 vs. CF40min=0.74±0.04; CF90min=0.68±0.02 and LP50min=0.73±0.06; LP90min=0.65±0.04, P\u3c0.05). However, fat oxidation after LP was greater than CF between 30-90 minutes of recovery (mean total fat oxidation: LP=10.9 g vs. CF=8.4 g; P\u3c0.01). The increases of EE and fat oxidation during post-exercise recovery were greater after multiple sets of resistance exercises performed with larger muscle mass than smaller muscle mass. This finding has practical implications for resistance training designed as part of weight management programs
